Ignatian Retreats and Spiritual Direction

Faith in Timor-Leste is lived mostly at the level of devotion. Many Timorese look upon personal accompaniment and retreats as spiritual luxuries meant only for Religious and seminarians.

Through the Ignatian Pastoral Ministry, the Jesuits hope to help deepen the faith of the people, and improve their life of faith.  Pastoral services are organized and coordinated in the parish and school in Railaco, and in the chapels in Ulmera where the Jesuit education project is located.  In addition, the Apostleship of Prayer is active in the whole territory. The Jesuits also conduct retreats, and offer spiritual direction and accompaniment.

The work is an effort to make known the richness of the Ignatian spiritual tradition and to make it the way of proceeding in pastoral and sacramental ministries in the local Church.  Our goal is to encourage Ignatian Spirituality among lay people, priests and other Religious, and especially in the areas of ecology and education.  To do so we will be offering Ignatian retreats, encouraging Jesuits to be more involved in the retreat ministry and providing them with tools to do so, and collaborating with people with a background or interest in Ignatian spirituality.

Our long-term plan is to set up a Center for Ignatian Spirituality in the country that will also serve as the base for our activities in this ministry.
